Firefighters Put Fitness First
The St. Louis Fire Department, in collaboration with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF) and Local 73, has recently trained 22 members as Peer Fitness Instructors (PFIs). These newly trained PFIs are set to take their certification exams soon, marking a big step toward a healthier fire department.
This initiative is part of the IAFF's Fit to Thrive (F2T) program, which helps firefighters be more active more often. The program focuses on accessibility, inclusivity, and long-term behavior change—empowering departments to build a stronger, healthier fire service from within.
The 22 PFIs will be accessible to every member of every bureau within the St. Louis Fire Department, making sure support and guidance are available wherever and whenever it's needed. It’s a clear example of what collaboration and working together can achieve.
As Deputy Fire Chief Derrick Phillips put it:
“Our collaborative partnership with the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF), members, and officers of the fire department on the Fit to Thrive program is a pivotal step toward improving the long-term resiliency of our personnel and their families. By supporting Peer Fitness Instructors, we're enhancing our fire service's effectiveness and ability to serve the community with strength and dedication.”
Local 73’s Health and Wellness Committee Chairman Jake Newman added:
“These members will be a force multiplier in further pursuing health and wellness for the department.”
This initiative sends a clear message to all members: "We are here for you" and reinforces the importance of health and fitness in keeping our crews safe, ready, and resilient.
By prioritizing health and wellness, the department is investing in its ability to serve the public safely, efficiently, and effectively. A healthier fire department means a more prepared and capable team. Protecting our community starts with taking care of those who serve it.
